Don Barrow - Barrie Whizzo Williams by Paul Lawrence The Motor Sporting life of Barrie 'Whizzo' Williams by Paul Lawrence ISBN 978-1903378625

“Whizzo – the motor sporting life of Barrie Williams’. For 50 years, Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams has been thrilling motor racing crowds with his outstanding talent on the circuit and great sense of humour off the track. He has raced and rallied with great success, starting in 1957. He has had a life full of adventure, excitement, success and a few bumps. This is his story. When discussing the title for this book, he said: ‘Should we call it ‘Whizzo’ the first 50 years?’ Still racing with as much speed and determination as ever, he is currently president of the British Motorsport Marshals’ Club. “I’ve raced every year, I’ve never stopped racing,” said Barrie. “I don’t know what I’d do without racing. I don’t know what else to do. It’s my way of life. I’ll drive anything with four wheels. I race to win, but if I don’t it’s not the end of the world. With a bit of luck, there’s always another race.”
This is Whizzo's story.

RAC Rally Action - From the 60s, 70s & 80s
RAC Rally Action - From the 60s, 70s & 80s By Tony Gardiner - ISBN 1903706971
This book truly represents an enthusiast’s view of the RAC Rally: allowing you to relive the events if you were there, or offering the next best thing if you weren’t.

Tony always took a week of his annual leave to watch ‘The RAC’, and reckons he covered more than 28,000 miles chasing rally stages around the country. Luckily for us, he always took his trusty Zenit camera and recorded hundreds of moments of RAC Rally action, each now frozen in time for posterity. These images, which have not previously been published, have an energy which brings the rally back to life and reminds us how far removed modern rallying is from the much simpler pre-WRC era. For all who love the ‘Rally of the Forests’ period of top level rallying, here is an incredibly involving evocation of three decades of great motorsport. All aspects of the event are covered including rare photos from manufacturers’ archives, rally documents (regulations, programmes, road books, crew notes), and a full colour cutaway illustration of a famous winning car. This publication has full approval of the Royal Automobile Club and the Motor Sports Association.

Subaru Impreza 2nd edition

Subaru Impreza 2nd edition
Subaru Impreza 2nd edition By Brian Long - ISBN 1845840283
Did you know that the Subaru name originates from the Japanese word for Pleiades, the seven daughters of Atlas and Plieone placed in the sky by the Greek God Zeus after their death and that the Subaru badge represents the six stars in the Taurus constellation, reflecting the six arms of Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru’s parent (before Toyota bought it out)? Neither did we till we came across Brian Long’s encyclopaedic book on the Subaru Impreza.

The book is a must-read for every Impreza fanatic and goes into great detail about the origins of Subaru, how the company’s founders started off making light planes and then aircraft for Japan’s war effort, how they got into cars with the 356cc twin-cylinder two-stroke 16bhp 360 minicar of 1950s vintage and the subsequent progression of their road and rally cars. In fact did you know that the Legacy was their first rally car, not the Impreza and that Subaru might have pulled the plug on the Impreza WRC had Colin Mc Rae not won the Legacy’s last rally?

Subaru’s rich motorsport history, specifically that of the Impreza has been painstakingly choronologised with details on all the cars, drives and rallies the car has competed in since debut. Included are superb rally pictures along with period advertising and brochures from the Japanese, US, European and Australian markets. The level of detailing is incredible but that can, at times, make the book a bit tedious. All said, a must for every Impreza aficionado.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Mitsubishi Lancer Evo By Brian Long - ISBN 1903706270
Lancer ... The name conjures up many different images. For some, it evokes memories of the first generation cars, introduced in 1973, which fought with the best on the Safari Rally and came out the victors. Others will remember the second generation models - especially the turbocharged versions, the original Mitsubishi wolf in sheep's clothing - and who could not be aware of the legendary status of the Evolution (Evo) series, launched in 1992.

Forged in the fierce heat of WRC (World Rally Championship) competition and honed by years of continuous development, the Lancer Evolution is not only one of the greatest rally cars of all time, but has also become one of the most desirable high performance road cars too. With a foreword by the manager of the R&D Motorsports Section, and written in Japan with the full co-operation of Mitsubishi and key staff members, this is the definitive international story of all the world's Lancers, whether they carried Mitsubishi, Dodge, Colt, Plymouth, Valiant, Eagle, Proton or Hyundai badges, with special emphasis on the Evolution models.

Without doubt, the model has firmly established its place in history, but we can never rest on our laurels. The enthusiasm of the fans gives us the energy to keep moving forward, and their spirit is incorporated in every Lancer, past, present and future.

Works Wonders book Works Wonders
Works Wonders is a top competition manager's nostalgic view of a golden age of motorsport - the Fifties and Sixties. it was a time when you could buy a car from a manufacturer's catalogue, take it to a tuning shop, stick a set of numbers on the side and go racing or rallying with it. If you were good enough, you might even beat the works drivers in similar cars; and if that happened, there was a good chance you would be invited to join them for a future event. A measure of professionalism had entered what previously had been essentially an amateur sport, but it had not been allowed to corrupt it. As always, winning was the ultimate objective, but it was not the tense and humourless business it would later become because in those days there were fewer commercial pressures on drivers to perform out of the car as well as in it; there was still time to have fun on the way to victory. Those were the days of the great rallies like the Monte Carlo, the Alpine, the Liege-Rome-Liege and the Acropolis and it was a vintage time for the classic endurance races like the Le Mans 24-Hours and the Sebring 12-Hours. It was also a time when groups of enthusiasts would band together to tackle world time and distance records with production cars and it was a time when motorsport was more accessible than ever before or since.

Big Healeys in Competition book Big Healeys in Competition: Austin-Healey 100, 3000 and Jensen Healey in Race and Rally
The Austin-Healey 100 and 3000, in all their variants, were raced and rallied extensively and enthusiastically from the very beginning in the early 1950s. For over ten years, big Healeys, from the 100/4 to the 3000 Mark III, were a force to be reckoned with on the track - at Sebring, Le Mans, in the Mille Miglia and in club competition - and, particularly, on the rally stage. Later, the Jensen Healey too was raced by a small, but dedicated band of drivers. This book looks at the competition history of these remarkable sports cars in rally, race and record attempt, including the competition history of many individual cars and all the 'works' cars. This carefully researched title sheds new light on the still-glittering glories of the Big Healeys.

He began his career as a dyslexic accountant, keeps a low profile and dislikes publicity and has yet been called ‘the Richard Branson of motor sport’. Meet David Richards, the quintessential Driven Man. This book is the first to tell Richards’ life story. Author Alan Henry takes readers from Richards’ first competition as a rally navigator to his World Rally Championship as team principal for Subaru. Richard Burns Book Richard Burns Book
Rally driver Richard Burns from Berkshire has risen to the peak of his sport in the shadow of Colin McRae, but is now an acknowledged star in his own right and a genuine rival to the Scot. A very different personality, he has struggled to gain the respect both of his peers and the public but he has the potential to be even more successful than McRae. With his measured approach and flair for publicity he is now being compared with Paddy Hopkirk. This book covers Richard's rallying career, starting from when he was a boy, via Mitsubishi and on to Subaru. It also contains details of Richard's 2000 season campaign, ending with his third successive victory in the British Rally. There are some excellent pictures too (both personal and rallying ones). Highly recommended for Richard Burns fans and those of rallying in general.

Safari Rally Books Safari Rally Book
Forget the format of the cover: this is not like most of Reinhard Klein's rally books - but it is possibly one of his best works. With archive pictures from the 'McKleins' of their day, Hugh Bishop and Colin Taylor among them, and with text by rally oracle John Davenport and film photographer Helmut Deimel, this is a history of the East African Safari, a hugely prestigious event for manufacturers. From the Coronation Safari of 1953 for standard cars on massive trans-Africa routes from Kampala in the north to Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam in the south, the event has been condensed to the shorter, repeated stage event of today, but is no less tough. Each year gets a dedicated four pages in this large hardback, with a brief commentary, and statistics by John and Francesca Davenport, Fred Gallagher and Ingrid Dunand.

Beginning with a foreword on Safari philosophy by Eric Cecil, this book is packed with great images, from two locals stuffing a VW Type 3 tyre with straw to finish a section, to a Celica emerging from the mud like a surfacing hippo. The vivid pictures, many from the early years in black and white, bring home with a bang the inescapable realities of the Safari, from extreme conditions to smashed parts. Later, there are fantastic colours, places and people, as futuristic rally spaceships flash past clay hut villages. Get the picture of the Bond Minicar - complete with auxiliary sail - arriving in Nairobi (it was never officially entered). There's even a shot of Erik Carlsson and Gunnar Palm demonstrating their famous Saab rollover after the rally, and close-ups of the legendary lash-ups desperately constructed to struggle to the finish. By '75, proper 'racing cars' are creeping in, but heroes such as Shekhar Mehta and Joginder Singh crop up time and again. Just a couple of the captions are off-kilter, such as the Peugeot 403 identified as a Volvo - and VW exponent DP Marwaha appears a few times, but identified only once.

Dakar the Challenge of the Desert Books Dakar the Challenge of the Desert
A quarter of a century after Thierry Sabine organised the first event, the ‘Dakar’ has not only survived, it is thriving. The higher profile brought about by the attention of the world media and the big spending vehicle manufacturers have produced a stronger organisation. This has evolved and grown organically from within. Many of the main organisation roles have been filled by successful competitors from the past. Men like Hubert Auriol and Patrick Zaniroli are now returning some of their experience to the sport. The most important aspect to this world famous event is the human experiences that all competitors and officials will remember. There is something about the experience that keeps competitors returning year on year to endure, commit and with sheer will power arrive at the finish. It is one of the few remaining international motorsport events where an amateur has the opportunity to compete alongside world champions. What is certain is that the ‘Dakar’ will continue to flourish; that the course will change constantly and for the amateur and professional alike it will always be an achievement to simply finish. Those competitors that are lucky enough to finish in the top ten positions in any of the classes deserve our admiration.

“The desert has humbled me. I don’t have illusions anymore about any power that I wield in life. One can’t measure life with a stopwatch. I realise now that the rules of successful teamwork need to be applied to the entire human family on the face of the earth.” Ari Vatanen

A High in the Andes: Taking Part in the Inca Trail Rally Book A High in the Andes: Taking Part in the Inca Trail Rally Book
Gather together 50 classic rally cars and another 50 4x4s in Rio de Janeiro and send them off on a seven-week rally through the Andes, Atacama Desert, Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia and you are sure to have a few adventures. Vic Quayle and his wife Pam took their 4x4 over to South America to have the trip of a lifetime. They were not disappointed. Organized by the Historic Endurance Rally Organisation (HERO) the event was going to be rough and tough from the outset. It would follow in the footsteps of the famous London - Mexico World Cup Rally in 1970 which was won by Hannu Mikkola in a Ford Escort. John Brown, top endurance rally organizer, warned the entrants of the dangers to be encountered: the remoteness of the terrain and altitude sickness - participants would be going up to 16,500 feet and spending a great deal of time at over 12,000 feet. But the challenge was not to be missed by the 300-strong crew in 100 cars that ventured out from the start in October 2001. This was a rally of superlatives. One of the longest ever held, it traversed the highest road in the western world; accompanied the world's highest railway line; crossed the world's driest desert, the Atacama; and visited the world's southernmost ever Rally Control on Tierra del Fuego. The crews travelled through six countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, before returning to Brazil and the finish in Rio de Janeiro and with all manner of adventures along the route.
